GHOST CAR – Lucky 7

GHOST CAR – Lucky 7

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Today it’s a new garage rock four piece from London, Ghost Car. They had a debut 7″ (“Stuck In The Mud”) on NYC’s Greenway Records and are following up with their second “Woman In The Shadows” on Bristol’s Stolen Body Records. Coming on like Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” meets Babes In Toyland “Fontanelle” with a bis style sine wave, it’s suitably high octane for a band of their name! (see the Lucky 7th tune)

Ghost Car are Clara Bleda (keyboard), Laura Hart (drums),  Maria Paton (bass and vocals), Maeve Henry (guitar and vocals), and they are a force to be reckoned with.

But what makes them tick? Only one way to find out…with their Lucky 7 choices – Clara up first…and first time on VS for The Big O…

1. Roy Orbison – In Dreams (Clara)
Such a romantic tune, evoking a strange and eerie atmosphere. It’s also amazing in the scene in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet.

2. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Stagger Lee (Laura)
There is a beautiful darkness in the way he tells stories, I am transfixed by his lyrics.

3. Deerhoof. Paradise Girls (Maria)
This band has had a big impression on me. They have such an original sound and their live performance is insane.

4. Thin Lizzy. Rosalie (Maeve)
They made me dream of playing guitar solos in front of people. Their energy is mind blowing and Phil Lynott’s voice is iconic.

5. The Slits – Typical Girls
The Slits are very inspiring to us as they are all very different characters and learned to play for the passion of starting a band. They found their own unique way of playing their instruments, and wrote powerful tunes about everyday moments.

6. Suburban Lawns – Janitor
This tune is so fresh and unique, and they way she sings and performs is awesome. The lyrics “I’m a janitor, Oh my genitals” are taken from a mis heard conversation.

The Lucky 7th: Ghost Car – Woman in the Shadows
“Woman In The Shadows” was the beginning of the band. It was probably the first or second song we wrote and we were inspired by all the incredible female artists that have lived throughout history hidden under a big shadow of unrecognition. This song is also one of our favourites because it gives us a lot of strength every time we play it. This is our latest single released on Stolen Body Records in June, and the video premiered last week.
