MENACE BEACH – Lucky 7
LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…today it’s spiky far-out (or I could say farfisa out) Leeds outfit Menace Beach, led by Ryan Needham and Liza Violet. They’ve got a brand new album “Black Rainbow Sound” (produced by Matt Peel of Eagulls) coming at the end of August, following up from early 2017 debut “Lemon Memory” and if lead single (the titular “Black Rainbow Sound”) is anything to go by it’s gonna be a riot.
With a thumping Suicide-esque organ, insistent vocals and an evocative spoken word cameo from kindred spirit Brix Smith (The Fall, The Adult Net, Brix & The Extricated), it’s swathed in Swervedriver like atmosphere and bristling with JAMC snark, and like the rest of the album, in a slight deviation in direction was put together as a multi layered studio record rather than a one and done (give or take) live room capture. The Brix thing was simply meant to be – the day that Liza finished reading her autobiography, Brix played the band on her show when she sat in on 6Music.
I’ve enjoyed Menace Beach ever since I first heard Marc Riley let them rip, so I’m pleased as punch that they’ve agreed to appear on Velvet Sheep, with Liza’s choice of tuneage…including one with Velvet in the title for extra plus points.
1. Add N To (X) – Robot New York (live)
When I was little I had this on VHS recorded off the TV and I watched it over and over. It’s the first thing I saw and heard that made me find out what a synth was, and I completely fell in love.
2. B-52’s – Big Bird
Their vocal delivery is totally unbeatable in my eyes! The line “what’s it doing, what does it want?” about a big bird flying around above you is the best.
3. Silver Apples – Velvet Cave
I discovered this way too late but I think it must have influenced most of my favourite artists. It taught me that if you find your favourite sound you might as well stick with it for a whole song.
4. Sugarcubes – Mama (live)
I’ve loved this song since I was really young and her vocal in this live version is so so strong.
5. Broadcast and The Focus Group – A Seancing Song
A dreamy reminder to keep it witchy.
6. Martin Rev – I Heard Your Name
I really like Suicide and I’ve played them to death, so I was really happy to find this gem from Martin Rev.
