SIX BY SEVEN – Lucky 7

SIX BY SEVEN – Lucky 7

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Today, aptly it’s the turn of Nottingham’s Six By Seven. When I first heard them in the late 90s, on some plainly decorated Beggars’ Banquet 12″s they seemed both classy and out of step with the other stuff that I was hearing while ensconced at my first job at MTV. Their Spacemen 3 enamoured drone rock combined shoegazer lyrics, deftly applied electronic signatures and on occasion some big beats. Apparently when they started out they cleared a room of A&R doods and it didn’t put them off, which I fully admire.

It turns out their poppiest number “Eat Junk Become Junk” (like The Prodigy “Firestarter” played by Can) ended up as a slogan emblazoned on Kele from Bloc Party’s chest, and from the likes of “Mercury” it’s clear that Mr. Okereke was in thrall in more ways than one. Very much still a going concern, after one brief hiatus, and led by Chris Olley, Six By Seven have a fastidious work ethic, and a forensic attention to detail. But, if you missed it then I very much urge you to check out the two big reissues by Beggars Arkive – their cult classic album “The Closer You Get” backed with a Peel Sessions disc and a “Greatest Hits” package, so you can see what was so ahead of its time we’re only now 20 years on catching up.

As well as the reissues out this week the band have put the original line up back together for two special gigs – a homecoming in Notts – on 4 March at the Maze (unfortunately sold out, as Sleaford Mods might put it “tied up in nottz”) and on 11th March at old stomping ground of theirs and mine, the Highbury Garage.

In the meantime Chris (front of pic) was so into choosing some tuneage for Velvet Sheep, he’s also chosen a “song for ewe”, but for starters check out this motorik inspired Lucky 7 which features fellow VS favs Ripley Johnson’s Wooden Shjips…but first, this gem…

1. Spacemen 3 – So Hot (wash away all my tears)
Beautiful simple and fragile song which reminds me of JJ Cale and Simon and Garfunkel.

2. Fad Gadget – Back To Nature
Korg MS20 synth with Korg KR 55 drum machine and some distortion with dead pan lyrics. It’s true punk and it’s the music I love.

3. DAF (Deutsch Amerikanishe Freundschafft) – Kebaptraume
Korg MS20 with real drums and Fascist chanting. Totally tongue in cheek with outrageous lyrics. My favourite DAF song.

4. David Bowie – Fantastic Voyage
Off “Lodger”, not his greatest album but I love this song, it’s a hidden gem and it takes me back to when I first saw him. The world is not the same without him.

5. John Carpenter – The Duke Arrives
Brilliant slice of synth Kraut by the master of horror. Dark and evil sounding music and one of my favourite films ever.

6. Wooden Shjips – Motorbike
I love motorbikes and this reminds me of riding, fast moving forward motion music that is dirty and dark and doesn’t give a fuck.

The Lucky 7th: Six By Seven – Mother
Not sure how this song is already up on youtube…I haven’t even posted the albums out yet. Brand new song from the EX album. If you ask me to pick my own stuff I will always go for the newest thing I’ve done.
