SWEDISH DEATH CANDY – Lucky 7
LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…
Today, is the turn of another new garage band who are grrr-eat as Tony The Tiger might say. On Hassle Records, Swedish Death Candy have got a touch of Castle Face Records at their core, they remind me a little bit vocally of Brendan Benson (those high Beatles harmonies), and they pack a monster Sabbath riff as played by WAND. They’re due to play the Bristol psych fest on 7th July, and are sure to make the walls quake until the sweat tributaries make a tidal wave towards the stage to allow some proper hang 10 crowd surfing.
They’ve got a single out called “Won’t Be Long” (more below) and it won’t be long before they play up a storm near you, but in the meantime, to help introduce them to ewe…here’s a peerless list of influences and general likes that I can only but doff my trucker’s cap to…starting with this beaut…
1. Thee Oh Sees – Penetrating Eye
This track has literally everything I could ask for, good job John.
2. Sydney Bechet – Petite Fleur
One of those melodies that’s both beautiful but makes you feel slightly uncomfortable, like a hot cousin.
3. David Bowie – Moonage Daydream (live)
This version gets me so so pumped. Also my second favourite guitar solo ever (after “when the music’s over”) .
4. Powell – Junk
Pure filth. Listened to this record a tonne when making our album, was recorded at the same studio. Got to see him play it too, definitely one of the better gigs this year.
5. Thundercat – Tron Song/Bus In These Streets
One of those rare dudes that makes music school seem fun/worthwhile.
6. Neil Young – Barstool Blues
Live fast, Neil Young.
