“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.

Today’s guest is a drummer, lover, and not a fighter. He’s thumped a rhythm for some of the underground’s finest – Sonic Youth, my beloved Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks and most recently holding court for Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus. A well loved figure, statesmen, sticksman, spokesman, he’s a benevolent soul with a big heart and a thumping metronomic beat. Not averse to banging on bits of old cars, sheet metal, junkyard kits – I asked him to bang on about a tune he’s enjoyed recently(ish) (soz for the delay). It’s the truly legendary, Bob Bert everybody…

I first saw Bob play with the Chrome Cranks at the Highbury Garage after I interviewed Peter Aaron for the original Velvet Sheep fanzine (busy that day, since I also spoke to Craig Wedren outside Camden Dingwalls). Bob was imposing and imperious and it was a real psychobilly freakout.

I knew Bob was a great stick when I approached him for an anniversary feature of Pussy Galore’s “Dial M For Motherfucker” for The Quietus and not only was he accommodating he also put me in touch with Julie Cafritz. Here’s that piece again, it was great fun to put together and I was chuffed how it came out:

When I got in touch with Bob for the reinvigorated VS fanzine, he characteristically got back quickly (quicker than a stick tapping 1-2-3-4):

“Hi Nick,
Funny right now & tonight I’m staying at Julie Cafritz house in Mass, playing tonight with Lydia, would love to do it. I’ll get on it next week when I’m home! Thanks Bob”

ps. here’s Julie Cafritz’s “song for ewe” choice:

It’s been a while getting Bob’s “song for ewe” choice up here, for one reason or another and in the meantime Maggie Vail of Bangs/Kill Rock Stars wanted to pick the same band. I told her that Bob had already selected them, to which she lovingly replied:

“Of course BOB would. jerk. (I’m gonna hang out with him tomorrow I think so I’ll kick him in the shins for good measure).”

Here’s what Maggie went for instead:

But for the main feature, the headline act, here is what Bob chose, and it’s pleasingly Anglophile, without further ado, here’s Bob’s “song for ewe”…

“My obscure song of the day is by the UK band Comet Gain entitled “The Fists In The Pocket”. This is the lead off track from the LP ‘City Fallen Leaves’ .

I love Comet Gain and own at least 4 of their albums and play them a lot. Very underrated and pretty unknown especially here in the USA.”

VIVE LE BOB BERT!
