“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists and music peeps beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.

Today it’s an ex pat American artist named after a Captain Beefheart song. A member of Billy Childish’s Stuckist movement, married to Sexton Ming, she was at the heart of two of my favourite bands at the time of Velvet Sheep fanzine’s original incarnation – Mambo Taxi and Voodoo Queens of “Supermodel, Superficial” John Peel festive 50 fame. It’s the awesome and awe-inspiring, pen, pastels and paint but not Turner prize thanks punk rocker, Ella Guru!

After our journey into 90s fashion with fellow Mambo Taxi member Delia Sparrow yesterday for her “song for ewe”…

DELIA SPARROW from MAMBO TAXI & THE NUNS – Song For Ewe

…I was chuffed that Ella Guru agreed to share hers. After Mambo Taxi, Ella left with Anjali Bhatia to form Voodoo Queens who took the snarly, snot and added further vim & vigour, most pointedly with the anthemic “Supermodel, Superficial” & “Kenuwee Head” singles and “Chocolate Revenge” album on Paul Cox’s (a former 5-a-side football foe of mine) Too Pure Records.

Ella left and began painting without prejudice again in 1997. She was one of thirteen founder members of the Stuckist (anti conceptual and pro-figurative) art movement and launched the website stuckism.com

http://www.stuckism.com/

and took part in the first well-publicised protest against the Turner Prize at the Tate Britain and continues to do so, alongside partner/artist in crime Sexton Ming (of Diamond Gussets fame, whose record Wiiija’s Gary Walker gave me when I first met him at Rough Trade in the early 90s)

Ella continues to play music, with Ming as part of band The Tasty Ones, and has also played in the Deptford Beach Babes. She’s a leader not a follower, and so I’m chuffed she’s agreed to lead me & Velvet Sheep readers to some new music with her “song for ewe” so without further ado,

IT’S OVER TO ELLA:

“A song that’s been on my mind

ok i’ve found it… not about me but someone I know who seems never to make up their mind. One story after another, all end in almost maybes…

The Artist and Musician Grande Dame is also a video artist

This is one of the best animations ever:

And she is currently being featured on Giphy:

Grande Dame is a fabulous visual artist, animator, musician and DJ. I sometimes look after dog, cat and flat while she’s away. I find the atmosphere of her seafront Victorian former hotel very inspiring and enjoy painting with the company of her Bischon Frise, Booboo.
