“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.

Today’s guest is an anti-hero that’s resolutely contemporary and yet would definitely have graced the fanzine back in the day. Combining the sludging slabfest of Nirvana’s “Bleach” with the razor sharp percussion of the Jesus Lizard and the pitch black humour of Killdozer, they are on legendary Seattle label Sub Pop to boot. It’s the delightfully named, gratifyingly noisy PISSED JEANS with their chief piss-taker, not so much lead singer as lead stand-up and mouthpiece of the modern vaguely pathetic emasculated man, MATT KORVETTE.

You only have to look at the pic above taken by PJ’s unlikely guitar hero Brad Fry to see that these guys don’t take themselves ultra seriously, and their brilliant video for “Bathroom Laughter” on 2013’s stand out album “Honeys” combines Tim Allen style home improvement infomercial with the most horrific of Public Service Announcements. Not normally in the habit of showing the band’s own videos in “song for ewe” but for such a funny one, I must make an exception…

And while I’m making an exception, let’s break the rules again, since the video for “Boring Girls” taken from last year’s reissue of Pissed Jeans debut “Shallow” is also pretty special…

Last year I was lucky enough to do an extensive e-mailer with Matt Korvette for Caught In The Crossfire zine, which is well worth a read.

The band are set to play Leeds and then two nights at the 100 Club in August, but before they come to liven your spirit and deaden your ear drums, here’s something to whet your whistle.

It’s over to Matt to find out his “song for ewe”…

“My choice is Rob Gee with “How’s Everybody”. I think it’s always important to check in with a crowd and see how they’re doing, and Rob Gee kinda took the Andrew WK approach years before AWK put on his first white tee. Also this track gets stuck in your head immediately.”

THANKS TO MATT & RYAN OXLEY AT SUB POP RECORDS UK.
