REIGNING SOUND, LIVE @ 100 CLUB
BY THOMAS “T-BIRD” JONES
On a mild Monday night in London a music masterclass was taught in a basement bar in the middle of busy Oxford Street..
The world famous 100 Club hosted Reigning Sound and it delivered in every way possible..
An already enthusiastic crowd, who had earlier been brought to a frenzy by The Castillians and The Number Ones, explode in love for the five men on stage fronted by the most underated frontman in music, Greg Cartwright.
Running through a back catalogue that only most of us can dream of he serenades us with an early “Time Bomb High School” and the crowd are putty in his hand..
Throwing out a raucous “If You Cant Give Me Everything” and “Reptile Style” takes this gig to the next level. As the temperature in the room soars so does the excitement of whats coming next..and it’s “Stop And Think It Over”, a hark back to The Compulsive Gamblers. The entire crowd are dancing like its the end of the world.
They launch into “Bad Man”, an Oblivians masterpiece, and time stops for two and a half minutes.
Greg Cartwright’s perfect heartbreaking melodies coupled together with a tight, snappy band behind him make for a perfect mix and you can see with every tear stained lyric he enjoys taking us on his journeys.
A cover of “Black Sheep” by Nuggets’ favourites Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs is thrown in as a respite from Cartwright’s amazing homespun songs.
“Never Coming Home” from Reigning Sound’s latest album, “Shattered”, is performed with such soulful strings and heart that it and all the other songs on the album fit perfectly into the Reigning Sound back catalogue with consumate ease…
So there you have it, one of the best gigs ever! Was it ever gonna be any different?
THANKS TO THOMAS FOR THE WORDS
