SLEAFORD MODS – Lucky 7

SLEAFORD MODS – Lucky 7

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Today, it’s not the Brexit-y Rollers, it’s Velvet Sheep favourites, true modern day punks (punks Nottz dead?) the Sleaford Mods, on the verge of their new album “English Tapas” (released on Rough Trade a week on Friday, 3rd March).

This time Jason Williamson even sings, on album closer “I Feel So Wrong” and although he can’t lift a dead weight without fighting, he’s still punching above his weight in the laureate lyric stakes, while Andrew Fearn has knocked out some cracking beats that both no nonsense and not without nuance (I know!) The Damned’s “Damned Damned Damned” is 40 years old for chrissakes, about time people lauded SM for their SM58 armed punk classics starting with this their best album yet, including this the Philip Green bating “B.H.S.”

Circa last full length “Key Markets”, Jason Williamson was kind enough to choose a “song for ewe” on Velvet Sheep. He went for JBE and the post got tons of hits and a shedload of RT action. Here it is again as a quick starter for ten.

JASON WILLIAMSON of SLEAFORD MODS – Song for Ewe

This time around, despite some absolutely full-on promotional action for the first worldwide release for an SM album, he’s been kind enough to find the time to furnish us with a “Lucky 7”, and once again it’s both grime-y and bang on the money.

So without further ado, let’s have it!

1. Roachee & Trim – Bad Boy

This tune is dirty. The real thing as far as I’m concerned. No messin.

2. Frank Ocean – Pink & White

Proper contemporary Soul. Heavy weight.

3. Solange – Don’t Touch My Hair

Seems to be a trend in decent Soul at the minute. Solange is proper. Makes her sister Beyoncé look a bit dated now. Lol.

4. Stormzy – Big For Your Boots

Looking forward to his album. This track is quite poppy but it works.

5. Conway The Machine – Stove Tops

Fuckin brutal.

6. Mach Hommy – Brand Name

Love this bloke. Floppy rhymes. Brutal.

7. SM track – Jason and the Talilband – Sleaford Mods

Back in the day, pre Andrew. No fuckin about with this. Tales from a pub table. Hopeless.

BIG CHEERS TO JASON WILLIAMSON AND TO MY GOOD FRIEND JOHN ESPLEN (WIPEOUT MUSIC)
