“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.

Today’s guest is an axe-meister general, a man with a name that was born for rock music from a band with a name that’s both onomatopoeic and pathological, it’s Zack Weil of Oozing Wound

Last year I fell for the bloody charms of the thrash metal trio from Chicago with the unforgettable moniker Oozing Wound. They sounded like early Metallica but had a laugh like Pissed Jeans. They didn’t take themselves too seriously. They had a song called “Ganja Gremlin” and made jeans patches depicting this self same mythical character. I first heard them aptly on a split LP with Black Pus, the Boredoms meets Tone Loc-esque side project of Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale, which I reviewed for the Quietus here.

Not content with that I also interviewed them for tQ here. They then released a second full album last year (following up from their debut “Retrash” on Thrill Jockey records).

Then, not having yet had my fill of the Oozing Wound I reviewed “Earth Suck” for Caught In The Crossfire zine.

And I chose “Earth Suck” as my album of the year for CITC here. It’s safe to say that I’m a fan.

They’re fast like Slayer, they’re hard like Helmet, and they’re fun like Mudhoney. What’s not to love.

That’s why I was pleased as punch when Zack agreed to choose an obscure song he’s enjoyed lately. This is his “song for ewe”

“Marcos Valle “Estrella”

There are jammers and then there are just mad fucking boogies, dude.  I’ve been kicking out this track a couple times a day for a few weeks now trying to keep from screaming my ass off at all the idiots out and about.  Summer in Chicago is really great for hating everyone around you, so it’s generally a good plan to play some mellow stuff to keep the murder urges down.

This song is one intense lil boogie, makes me wanna start exercising and shit.  Like, not really, but it almost makes me think that I might want to someday.  Valle looks like he’s going to explain the finer points of yoga and juicing to me, but I feel like it would be kinda nice. What a swell dude.”

THANKS TO ZACK, AND KEN LI AT THRILL JOCKEY RECORDS.
