A shout out to the unsung heroes that go about making Birmingham a brighter place..
by VELVET SHEEP’S THOMAS “T-BIRD” JONES
You’re in Birmingham and you wanna hear some Sixties Freak Outs and Seventies Fuzz Classics. See my main man Ben Drummond at one of his classic nights. Choose either Wax Truths or glide along to The International Submarine Club.
You won’t be disappointed!
Ever since I’ve known Ben he’s been passionate about music and all things fuzz laden and psychedelic tinged. Never before had i heard Serge Gainsbourg out on a Saturday Night..I was gobsmacked! I’m lucky enough to be able to call him a friend and have had the pleasure of putting nights on with him and his equally talented brother Jim. The night was Whyte Boots where you would hear Sixties hidden gems along with Soul classics and we would put bands on such as The Solomons, Swampmeat and had the pleasure of having Deadly Long Legs play their debut Birmingham show. Ben moved on to another long gone but certainly not forgotten night called FUZZZ!
Now having found his spiritual home as part of The International Submarine Club he continues to educate us all in the ways of French Freak Outs and Psychedelic Classics.. I suggest seeing him for a course of musical medication as soon as possible!
Gig goers and record buyers are all around us but sometimes there’s somebody that stands out from the crowd. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you.. David Malys. He supports the local music scene above and beyond and will always be at the merch stand looking to buy the odd 7″ or band t-shirt to wear with pride.
Speaking as part of Coldrice I know he’s always supported everything we’ve done..be it from something as simple as liking the page or new video to attending the shows or buying the wares. A keen gig goer, he can be found on the attending list to so many different nights and when there you know each gig has been appreciated and enjoyed. Read some of our brother’s blogs here..sit back and enjoy the words of a true unsung hero..
I’ll leave the last word to Black Mekon.. “nice guy..goes to gigs..like a Midlands Beatle Bob without the dancing”
Come to Birmingham and mention the name Joel Webster to people and I guarantee you within the first three somebody will know him and have a tale to tell.. Handsome Joel, Northern Joel, Preston..call him what you will..has a special place in many people hearts as one of Birmingham’s finest gig promoters.
His Killer Wave nights have been pumping our fine city full of musical hidden gems and classics for some good years now. His enthusisasm and out and out good nature make him a great friend to many and makes bands wanna come down and play. Warm Soda, the Parrots, The Castillians, Terror Watts, The Hungry Ghosts, Black Mekon have all graced the stage for our Joel. Birmingham would be less entertained without him for sure!
