“SHEEP DIP TIP” is a feature where Velvet Sheep icons pass on their top tips for future heroes.

Today’s tipster is a man who is not only my guitar hero, but the first person to appear on the re-invigorated, re-configured Velvet Sheep fanzine. His metallic buzzsaw guitar would scythe over the low-slung taut-skinned rhythm section of Touch & Go’s finest…it’s…

Duane gave me his tip at the same time as his “song for ewe” – the first on this site (here’s a reminder).

THE JESUS LIZARD’S DUANE DENISON – Song For Ewe

Therefore, it’s somewhat tardy and remiss of me, nearly a year later to get this up, but as it turns out, it’s also timely, because Duane’s tip for the top is launching her third album tomorrow…so without further ado (of which there’s been much already) it’s…

Over to Duane:

“I wanted to plug something w/you, Nick. Have you ever heard of a gal named Laura J Martin? She’s from Liverpool, currently in London. She writes her own tunes and sings and plays piano, flute, etc.

Very talented, very sweet young thing. She’s been in Nashville all this week working on her next album w/producer Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Will Oldham, etc) and I’m the guitar player on the session. We tracked 12 songs in 3 days!  A true Nashville session. But anyways, it’s interesting stuff, soft, kinda retro 60’s/70’s and she has a unique voice and writes well. I think she could “go places”…”

As well as featuring my man Duane Denison, there’s an all-star band including Lambchop’s Matt Swanson and Tony Crow plus Brian Kotzur from the Silver Jews. As the man says, a proper Nashville sesh! Well worth checking out.

THANKS TO DUANE DENISON. MUCH OBLIGED, SIR.
