“SONG FOR EWE”
with AJW BOURTON of
BLOOD SAUSAGE & CEE BEE BEAUMONT
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a bass player who played in the riot grrrl era band Blood Sausage who were one of the first proper interviews I did for Velvet Sheep fanzine when I phoned up Gary from Wiiija on the off chance and got put through to Dale Shaw. But it was with Cee Bee Beaumont – the garage instrumentalists (mentalists) with Damaged Goods Records that I saw this guy play live plenty of times since they always seemed to get some great supports with loads of touring American bands I loved, and of course opening for the incendiary Huggy Bear at their last ever gig at the Laurel Tree, Camden. It turns out that he now works for MTV, my old stomping ground – it’s (as Toby Amies once called him “the thinking woman’s John Entwistle”), Will, aka AJW Bourton!
Our FB led convo went thus:“Hey Nick that would be great thanks for asking .. i see you used to work at MTV ?exactly where i work nowdays !”
I told Will that I’d got my MTV Europe job via handing Alternative Nation presenter Toby Amies an original Velvet Sheep fanzine. Huggy Bear had been a big influence in even writing a zine, and I’d bumped into Tobe not long after seeing Will on stage supporting Huggy Bear at said Laurel Tree show.
“Ha Toby also a friend of mine thats great .. I’ll try to put some lines together this weekend when i’m on a break from the edits i’m doing this weekend cheers W”
The thought of edits at MTV gave me goose bumps as it was there (in my first job) that I had some of the best working days of my life (for an ace decade never to be repeated!)
To indicate and fill in the very short wait for Will’s choice, here’s a reprise of his Blood Sausage band mate Dale’s own “song for ewe”…
and, since it’s Christmas, here’s a beaut of Will getting festive (sorry for cheekily nabbing this one mate)…
…and sorry it’s taken me a good while to get this on the site, but since it’s nearly Xmas I’m putting right a few wrongs, and you can’t go wrong with Will’s ace choice…with a band so good they named it twice…
“Richard Twice , as I discussed with my dear wife seems like one of the worst band names ever ..picture the scenario – Richard and Richard pop to their local greasy spoon mid recording … ” so what are we going to call the group?”
A tumbleweed of momentary thought passes until the Arthur Mullard character behind the counter shouts “sausage egg chips and fried slice twice”…. Eureka! the rest is history .
“If I Knew You Were The One” is like a long lost 60s Bee Gees outtake appearing from the mists of the turning decade. It’s out of fashion and out of place but it’s still the best accompaniment for a lonely morning I know.”
CHEERS WILL. THE SAUSAGE AND CHIPS INSTANTLY TOOK ME BACK TO THE PARKWAY CAFE. IT’S AN MTV THING!
