“SONG FOR EWE”
with BRIDGETTE ELIZA MOODY of
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is the singer and one half of a band that like to keep it ethereal, the aptly named Haunted Summer. Adding her glacial intonation over the complex textures sewn by husband and musical partner John Seasons, the first time the pair played together it was at the end of an entire evening of Animal Collective covers (niche but great) performed at the Echo in LA, and their synergy in playing the cover of “Bees” was such that it was inevitable they should be a band. Writing and producing their own dream pop, they’ve played with the likes of Deafhaven, The Polyphonic Spree, David J of Bauhaus and a ton beside. With an album called “Spirit Guides” out now and a tour imminent, VS is pleased to introduce Bridgette Eliza Moody!
Here’s “The Woods” from “Spirit Guides”.
And for interests’ sake here’s the beautiful and beguiling cover of Animal Collective’s “The Bees” that started that fateful Haunted Summer…
“Spirit Guides” was written on the road and recorded in several studios including Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree and intriguingly the Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood, though there’s nothing Muppet-ish about the eerie pastoral stories that lie therein, ably assisted by a whole array of musicians including (but as they say not limited to) the heavier slung Dave Catching from Eagles of Death Metal and Chris Goss from Masters of Reality.
It’s clear that Bridgette has an eclectic musical palette so what has she chosen as her “song for ewe”? Without any further ado…
“Daniel Johnston is one of my all-time favorite songwriters and storytellers.
I had seen him a few years ago, and was beyond fortunate to catch the last few shows of his farewell tour last year. It was beautiful and heartbreakingly sad. I went all in and purchased every cassette they had in stock, which Daniel’s brother painstakingly copies and labels by hand.
I walked away with two armfuls of his discography, and it has been amazing going through each one and hearing songs I had never heard. This song caught me in the perfect moment, and was instantly my new favorite.”
