“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is singer and co-founder of a band that doesn’t just push the envelope of rock & roll, it picks it up on a drone and delivers it to your porch, knocks on your front door and runs off. I first saw Boss Hog at the Highbury Garage circa ’95 “Boss Hog” album tour, and cos I bought the vinyl I got a free and rather handsome slip mat. Pleasingly this band slipped and lurched all over the stage, sliding on the charisma that they effortlessly ooze. Here, 21 years later (unbelievably) this is a band that still feels ahead of the curve. Their new record, an EP called “Brood Star” on the ever-excellent In The Red & Bronzerat records features a panacea of punk that veers from the slick licks garage bombast of “Wichita Grey” to a song called “Nymph Beat” punctuated by undulating Lucasfilm-esque light sabres and dynamic stop-starts – all the yelps in the right places. It sounds like rock & roll reinvented, and who’d have thought that still possible…not only that thanks to Bob Bert’s always entertaining FB feed I found out that our guest today recently featured on the front of New York’s Daily News waving a placard saying “Reject President Elect”.

Also a member of Pussy Galore back in the day, a band I truly love and written many words about, this is a punk rocker that’s always welcome here – the impeccable, unimpeachable Cristina Martinez!

Since I got a promo of “Brood Star” I have played it loads, it zips by, like a drive-by shouting, leaving you shaken but stirred enough to hit repeat. To say it’s whet my appetite for a full LP “Brood X” (due next year) is an understatement. Check out “Wichita Grey” here…

I recently dropped a line to Jon Spencer, Cristina’s partner in band and life, and I was excited and surprised to get a brilliant reply from Cristina, and a most unexpected “song for ewe”, so without further ado, it’s over to the voice behind one of the most exciting bands in rock music today…

“I have a high intensity day job that involves a good deal of math so the time I get to listen to music is not much.

Mostly I listen to NPR and Die Antwoord. But post-election I had to cut out NPR. (Is it just me or does it seem the Koch Oligarchy donations have skewed their position ever so slightly?)

So where does that leave me now? Searching for something that will get me through the apocalypse. Because now I hear this every time I close my eyes:

THANKS SO MUCH TO CRISTINA & JON. YOU ROCK.
