“SONG FOR EWE”
with DUANE DENISON of
THE JESUS LIZARD
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is the first returnee for “song for ewe”, and his was first ever entry to the feature when the fanzine was reborn as a blog. I’m very excited he’s returned here because The Jesus Lizard are also on their way back!
When Touch & Go re-released their classic albums in 2008, the band got back together for a while and I was lucky enough to catch them for this second coming (had also seen them live in ’94).
It had been rumoured that Duane was keen to write new material with the band from his Nashville base, but for various reasons (some geographical) it didn’t happen. There’s no promises this time either, but recently David Wm. Sims announced a smattering of live outings for December this year on his Facebook page and then tantalisingly shared David Yow’s footage of rehearsals with the knowingly understated caption “Practice makes pretty good” with a characteristically tight teaser of “Monkey Trick” from their greatest of all time album “Goat”. And good news all round as Mac McNeilly is on drums (no disrespect to Jim Kimball who I love, but the fact Mac is back just feels right).
Today’s guest is an all-time guitar hero and an all-round gentleman, encapsulating a noble quality that belies his almost sinister coruscating, serrated metallic playing style. He loves a slide guitar, and with the thunderous rhythm of Sims/McNeilly behind and the psychotic yelpings of Yow raising above the parapet, it’s often a slide into the depths of Hades or a flume ride into Dante’s inferno. And his song choice has suitably biblical proportions too. Welcome back to VS to one of my all-time favs, Mr. Duane Denison!
“Ah rub it on me, rub it on me Duane” (The Jesus Lizard “Nub”)
So far the Jesus Lizard live dates are all US, but I’m keeping my fingers tightly crossed for a foray into the UK, but in the meantime, over to Duane with his second “song for ewe”…
“For my obscure song, how about “Damned for all Time” from the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack?
Scratch Acid would later do a cover version.
Ok then, thanks a lot Nick. Rock on!
Here’s the aforementioned Scratch Acid version (featuring of course Jesus Lizard band mates David Wm. Sims and David Yow)…
And just for the sake of completism, here’s Duane’s previous “song for ewe” choice, a tasty one from the NY Dolls.
