JACKIE MENDOZA – Song For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE”
with JACKIE MENDOZA

Jackie Mendoza by Tayo Okyekan

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest was born and raised in San Diego, 10 mins away from the Mexican border and a motherland whose influence reaches into her electro balladry like a Tijuana tendril. Signed to Luminelle Records, her single “De Lejos” based on the emotional trickiness of a long distance relationship, has a unique and singular sound, beautifully alien and intricately structured. Imagine if you’d never heard Bjork before, or if you’re into Dana Wachs and Vorhees and you’re some way towards the arresting otherworldly nature of Jackie Mendoza, who we’re very pleased to welcome to Velvet Sheep!

Apparently “De Lejos” was originally based on a ukelele and synth pop alchemy but after working with producer Rusty Santos, behind the fluid dream pop of Panda Bear’s current album “Buoys”, it has transmogrified into a minimal masterpiece of overwrought emotion with understated arrangement. Stripped nearly bare to become a motif of what Jackie Mendoza is all about, it’s quite something. Dayglo yet dreamy, hyper-real yet impressionistic. This is an artiste at work.

Jackie has chosen an unsurprisingly considered choice of tune, so without further ado, this is Jackie Mendoza’s “song for ewe”

“Anne Kaempf and Lior Shoov – Where is my Mind

I found out about Lior Shoov a couple of years ago while browsing videos on YouTube and eventually falling into a rabbit hole. I love finding obscure artists and musicians that make music way out of the ordinary.

Lior is one of those artists. I dug deep for videos of her live performances and found her and Anne Kaempf’s crazy cover of “Where is My Mind” by The Pixies. Their energy in this video is so contagious and reminds me of when I first started covering songs on ukulele, and uploading them onto YouTube. Lior is a multi-instrumentalist and sometimes even plays several instruments simultaneously —she’s so talented and creatively inspiring!”

THANKS VERY MUCH TO JACKIE, AND TO FRANKIE DAVISON AT STEREO SANCTITY PR
