“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is band leader of a new signing to the legendary Sub Pop label. Vancouver based quartet Jo Passed will release their first album “Their Prime” on 25 May and if lead single “MDM” is anything to go by, it’s going to be a firecracker. With a video (directed by Eleanor Petry) about being self absorbed on your digital device, if you’re reading this on your cell you should feel uncomfortable right about now, as it goes a bit The Shining meets Friday 13th or Planet of the Apes reimagined as an Apple ad that Stanley Kubrick might have been paid mega dollars to make. We are pleased to welcome to these pages, the almost titular Jo Hirabayashi whose music should definitely not be passed over…

Jo Passed began when Jo’s first band Sprïng formed with a college partner in crime Elliot Langford dissolved and he teamed up with another mate and drummer Mac Lawrie. After moving cross country from Vancouver to Montreal to find their rock fortune, the pair returned and recruited multi-instrumentalist Bella Bébé and multimedia artist (everything’s multi with Jo Passed) Megan-Magdalena Bourne on bass. United by a self professed love of The Zombies, Nirvana and Bach, I can definitely hear a bit of Superchunk and The Breeders too, and with Jo’s high register plaintive vocals a touch of Buzzcocks’ Pete Shelley too. It’s an intoxicating mix of emotional heft and a teeter-totter of pop punk dynamics, with Jo Passed about to hit “Their Prime” soon after two EP’s (cleverly titled “Up” and “Out”).

But never mind “Up” & “Out” what is “In” with Jo? Without further ado, here’s his “song for ewe”…

“The band is Vancouver band Little Sprout and this song is just too good. I admit I’m biased from recording it, but honestly that bias usually works the other way where i find it hard to listen to things I’ve worked on.

This song transcends that heh, it’s written by one of my longtime oldest friends Amie and I’m so happy she’s discovered her outlet with music and has this band now because it’s soo great.”
