MADDY MYERS of MOON PANDA – Song For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE”
with MADDY MYERS of
MOON PANDA

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today we introduce the intriguing Californian singer, songwriter of a beguiling new truly international yet Brighton based band called Moon Panda. A debut single called “Rabbit” recently released on the label My Little Empire, was a confident calling card – one that’s part Best Coast part Lykke Li. It’s dream pop that could easily be at home on 4AD. Today they’re at home on VS, and we bid a cheery hello to Maddy Myers!

Maddy and Danish guitarist Gustav Moltke teamed up with synth player and Bristolian George Godwin and percussionist and card-carrying Londoner Alfie Webb before decamping at the seaside, and it’s perhaps the laidback Bristol vibes that chime the most on “Rabbit”, further reinforced by producer Cameron Blackwood who has recently worked with trip hop influenced London Grammar (as well as The Horrors, British Sea Power & Florence & The Machine).

Moon Panda are clearly a cultured band. “Rabbit” is inspired by a character in Heiko Julien’s collection of dry witted 21st century love poems “I’m Ready To Die A Violent Death”, while they also claim influence from modernist iconoclast composer Charles Ives and fingerpicking maverick Erik Mongrain, and yet “Rabbit” shows a lightness of touch, and an ear for a pop melody. So I wondered what on earth Maddy would pick for her song choice here and, I was pleasantly wrong footed…so without further ado, this is Maddy’s “song for ewe”…

“Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath:

One of the many beautiful things about this song is that each person that listens to it goes on their own journey. If you listen to it in the right state of mind it can kind of hypnotise you and bring you to a realm of your choosing. When I hear it I feel like I’m floating through the cosmos without a destination. Gustav (guitarist) says he feels like he’s a nomad, riding a camel through the desert under a sky of stars – so we all get our own thing out of it!”

THANKS SO MUCH TO MADDY AND TO ELLIE THOMPSON AT PRESCRIPTION PR
