“SONG FOR EWE”
with MAYA FIRE of
WAX ON WATER
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is the singer from a group not too far away from where I work in Camden. Wax on Water lay it on very thick like Trent Reznor or DAF, while her rich tone with gutteral depth is like Kat Bjelland. With a new album called “Procession” on the way, welcome to VS, the brilliantly moniker-ed Maya Fire!
Check out the asterisky new song “Chelsea F**k”
Maya does it all, writes, sings and plays everything, and puts it out on her own Howling Tempest label, a full on one person firebrand. Plus she co-wrote and starred in her own short horror film called LACHRIMAE – putting the true threat into triple threat.
Turns out she’s got great music taste too, so without further ado, here’s Maya’s “song for ewe”…
“The track I’ve been listening to a lot lately is Can ‘…And More’ (Westbam Remix).
I’ve always been a big fan of Can and listened to them a lot when writing my album ‘Procession’. This remix in particular had a lot of influence on me when I was writing the single ‘Chelsea F**k” – I think because it sounds so greedy, insatiable and marauding that it encapsulated how I was feeling back then….
I’ve started being obsessed with it again recently (the joy of great music – it doesn’t age) and in the last few months it’s on my daily playlist – it feels so musical, so stark and so relevant to the screwed up world we’re living in right now.
The thumping industrial bass & electronica elements it has combined with the sheer musicality of the song makes it one of my favourite ear worms.”
