MIKE DONOVAN – Song For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE”

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is lead singer of The Peacers & Sic Alps who’s just released a second solo record with the meta title “How To Get Your Record Played In Shops”. This is not the first time he’s break down that fourth wall either since his last Peacers record was called “The Peacers Introducing The Crimsmen” (a made up other band) with the title displayed on a printed merch stand Tee. Basically, he’s a bit clever and we like that muchly. His music is a joyously modest mix of Malkmus and Money Mark, with his hand in your head, and his other hand on the wheel. Welcome back to Velvet Sheep fanzine, Mr. Mike Donovan!

Check out Mike’s taxi ride to find the DIY scene in the video for “Spiral Tee Shirt”.

Mike plays it all on the record with a laid back aplomb, and he’d rather have his record played in shops than on streams, that’s how indier-than-thou and vintage he is! Even the promo shot is self-consciously soft focused, but his smile is unmistakably hi-fi and this record is definitely feel good, but still apposite, like a pair of well-worn-in two left shoes half inched from outside a shop owned by The Man. Check out the self-consciously binary album artwork – made up of misstypes but no mis-steps.

We ask for an obscure-ish record listened to recently, and Mike does not disappoint…so without further ado, here’s his “song for ewe”…

“Yuzo Iwata’s latest rec on Siltbreeze “Daylight Moon” is an amazing, laid out record. I recommend the whole thing but here is “Border”, clocking in around 9 mins.

High free-rock explorations of unknown variety.”

Mike is playing this week, supporting garage guitar hero and label mate Ty Segall – the dates below…

Expect to see him playing it up a storm and then manning the merch stall…
