“SONG FOR EWE”
with MINDY GLEDHILL
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a singular and striking Utah singer/songwriter with a remarkable back story. She grew up in a devout Mormon family in Northern California and spent her high school years in Madrid, Spain where her parents were missionaries.
When the family moved to Utah she finished up high school and then went to Brigham Young University’s School of Music. A first album in 2004 “The Sum Of All Grace” led to her being well known in many Mormon households due to its religious content and saw her sign with a Mormon record label in Salt Lake where she saw the corporate side of the Church. Here she became acutely aware of long standing misogynistic bias and the grip of a patriarchal society and female inequality fostered in the Church specifically, and religion (and indeed society) as a whole.
As a result of her disillusionment, she moved away from the Church and embraced activism in women’s rights and in the LGBTQ+ community, and in turn managed to take many of her original fans on the same emancipating journey. With a new album due in 2019 (a first since 2013’s “Pocketful Of Poetry”) she’s released a new biographical and heartfelt single about her move from darkness into the light called “Rabbit Hole” (possibly the rabbit hole of research down which she found her realisation?) welcome to Velvet Sheep the powerful and inspirational Mindy Gledhill!
A lyric video feels very appropriate…
With a honeyed tone that’s a hint of Rumer, an edge that’s totally Caitlin Rose or Martha Wainwright and a quirk that’s firmly Feist, it’s a great appetiser for the next chapter of Mindy Gledhill.
In addition to Mindy speaking to inspire young Americans disillusioned by fundamental religion, she is very much about spreading the love and she’s also had her music featured on The Good Wife (what’s not to love about that!)
But what music has Mindy loved lately? Without further ado, this is Mindy Gledhill’s “song for ewe”…
“I recently discovered the genius music of Caroline Rose. She has the ability to make your whole world stand still while your heart breaks into a thousand pieces on tracks like “Getting to Me” and “More of the Same,” while at the same time, making you laugh hysterically with her wit and sarcasm in other tunes, such as “Bikini.”
With all of the women’s issues conversations going on right now, I find this track to be extremely timely. She approaches body confidence and sexism with a refreshing twist of humor that reaffirm just how ridiculous the social constructs are that most women grow up with.”
