PETER HAMMOND ex AU PAIRS & RHINO & THE RANTERS – Song For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE”
with PETE HAMMOND ex
AU PAIRS & (currently) RHINO & THE RANTERS

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest was drummer for the Midlands post punk expeditionaries Au Pairs. The Au Pairs produced two killer studio albums between 1978 and 1983 and cocked a snook at “contemporary sexual politics” or if you like cocked a snook at cocks, with a combo of clever, self-aware lyrics and insistent yet angular rhythms reminiscent of contemporaries Gang of Four or Pop Group, except with the sneering snarl of Lesley Woods at the helm. They were certainly doing it right.

The driving, snotty tub-thumping drumming of today’s guest were just the propulsion that Woods needed to cut through, his was the pulling back of the bow and hers the archery shot to the heart. He’s a percussion teacher and still very much a musician, turning from punk to swamp rocker behind the traps of a Birmingham based band called Rhino & The Ranters – part Urban Voodoo Machine part Kid Congo Powers’ Pink Monkey Birds…Welcome to VS – Pete Hammond!

Styling themselves as “gospel cow punk”, Rhino & The Ranters also features Pop Will Eat Itself founder & half of Bentley Rhythm Ace (the ace obvs) Richard March and their first album (artwork below) was released in 2010.

Pete & co. are working on a second record, but in the meantime this is the band at the Lunar Festival with Pete in action plus some rambunctious frontman action from Ryan Webb. I love the bit where the guy puts the beer on the front of the stage!

I am a fan of Pete’s work from back in the Au Pairs days (John Peel favs as they are) and was very keen to find out what gem he’d chosen as a “song for ewe”. I wasn’t disappointed…nor will you be…

“Hi Nick..Firstly here’s the track i was listening to yesterday…John Cale..”Legs Larry at the Television Centre”
from The Academy in Peril LP.”

Heart wrenching viola that randomly turns into a taped conversation with Larry Smith from the Bonzo Dog band playing the part of a narcissistic director trying to steal the show..pure surrealistic wonderfulness”

MANY THANKS TO PETE HAMMOND
