“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is one half of the Brooklyn based husband and wife electro noise duo Spotlights. They had an album called “Tidalls” on Crowquill Records in 2016 and have returned with their debut for Ipecac records called “Seismic” (about the catastrophic effects we’re having on our earth and future selves). They’ve been on an extensive tour with label mates and rock legends Melvins, which has informed their song choice (spoiler alert!) and they’re here on Velvet Sheep. Welcome Sarah Quintero!

Here’s a taster from “Seismic”, the track “What Is This? Where Are We?”:

And this is Sarah’s choice right here:

“It was hard to settle on one song since I usually get obsessed with a whole record. But this song came to mind immediately and has been a long time favorite. It’s simple and crushing. I think that’s what I love most about the Melvins.

The song starts with distorted drums and screaming guitar with that classic King Buzzo tone. Then breaks into powerful vocals and a smooth bass line that keeps you moving through the simple beat. It’s weird and almost feels like the anxiety that a horror movie gives you.

Creepy, dark and unnerving, making most listeners feel uncomfortable, it was the music I was always looking for as a teenager. And when I found it, it stuck with me forever. A song that I continue to listen to consistently for 20 years.”
