“SONG FOR EWE”
with STEVE IGNORANT
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a punk legend, an iconoclast singer & artist who co-formed the anarcho-punk band Crass. He’s also performed with groups including Conflict, Schwartzeneggar, Stratford Mercenaries, Current 93, and American band Thought Crime and as a solo performer. He’s done Punch & Judy shows, and written a book called The Rest Is Propaganda but more recently I’ve enjoyed his collabos with the band Paranoid Visions on the ace Overground Records. Choosing his song for ewe, it’s Steve Ignorant!
Steve Ignorant with Paranoid Visions have followed up on their 2013 LP “When…?” with a new album “Now and Then….!” recorded in Dublin and Norwich (where according to Wikipedia Steve lives and volunteers as on the local lifeboat). It’s a combo of new songs and reworked post-Crass ones or unreleased/under-deployed Paranoid Visions ones. Four to the floor, full of speed and full-sounding, it’s got all the conviction and passion you’d expect from the man from Crass.
I’ve sat on this for a while, so apologies for my tardiness, but it’s worth the wait and the album’s only been out a few weeks so all good. Without further ado, it’s over to Steve for an unexpected timeless classic slice of pop…
“”Lazy Sunday Afternoon” – Small Faces
I choose this song for its timeless feel-good factor. Anybody can sing along to it and I’m listening to it at the moment because a young bloke, called Georgio, recently heard it and is trying to learn the lyrics. So I quite often have to sing it to him.
Great band, Great song.”
THANKS TO STEVE IGNORANT, AND TO MY GOOD MATE JOHN ESPLEN AT OVERGROUND
