TARA CLERKIN – Song For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE”
with TARA CLERKIN

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a singer who loves a bit of lo-fi country, folk wonkiness and psych skronkiness. She’s got a debut album called “Hello” coming out in a couple of weeks on Bristol labels Stolen Body and Howling Owl. She is a startling talent who has chosen a similarly apposite singer-songwriter (and John Peel fav) so I’m pleased to introduce you to Tara Clerkin!

Here’s Tara in action in a previous incarnation from last year, strap yourselves in for a Rank style gong, Police Squad style freeze frame, Star Wars style captions, Alfred Hitchcock one-shot and Polyphonic Spree meets The Seeds meets Castle Face Records style musical madness…

Apparently the album “Hello” will also be available in “clay head format” which makes me think it’s hidden inside the blind sculpture of Lionel Richie from the “Hello” video. Very much hoping so and given that The Flaming Lips once gave away a record hidden inside a giant gummy bear skull anything is possible.

Recorded with her partner (Sunny from Taos Humm) in one week, it also features collaborations from various friends and musicians including members of Taos Humm, Edward Penfold and the collective Belvoir House Band.

But what of her “song for ewe” choice, without further ado it’s over to Tara:

“I recommend listening to ‘I’m going in a field’ by Ivor Cutler.

It’s one of his more delicate songs and, like many of his others, is incredibly simple in structure and production – with a perfect mix of heart-felt sentiment, humour and modesty.

It’s delightfully unaffected, and unrefined in any way besides expression; reminding me that songs can be as simple and unimportant as the urge to lie down in a field, and all the more beautiful for it.

He also had a gorgeous voice and knack for melody, so all this together makes for a real smile-jerker for me.”

THANKS MUCHLY TO TARA AND ALSO TO MY GOOD BUDDY SEAN NEWSHAM OF MUTANTE

Tara Clerkin – “Hello” is released May 12th 2017 – Stolen Body/Howling Owl Records.
