THE COATHANGERS – Lucky 7
LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…
Today, is the turn of Atlanta punk/garage combo and without hesitation they’ve probably chosen the most spot on Lucky 7 for Velvet Sheep fanzine ever – all bands that we would use to sum up our own spirit, so it’s made me love them even more. They’ve been around for a bit but only just arrived on our sonar, like a kraken rising from the sea heralded by sirens, which is apt given one of the songs on the new record, the Parasite EP is called “Captain’s Dead” (see below) and the cover artwork has a naughty nautical nastiness too and also features sea green vinyl. Here’s the band hanging out by Long Beach near their latest HQ…
and here’s said artwork, very “From The Crypt” garage style…
It’s angry, acerbic stuff, like a poke in the eye followed by some sea salt. Highly recommended, as are these tunes they’ve chosen…they’re economical with words but high on impact and great of taste…
1. The MAKE-UP – Hot Coals
This is the perfect love song; romantic and real.
2. The Stranglers – Golden Brown
It makes you feel like you’re standing in a cyclone of falling leaves. So pretty.
3. Pixies – Broken Face
Incredible impact in a few minutes. A musical 2 inch punch.
4. The Detroit Cobras – The Cha Cha Twist
Makes you wanna dance and break every glass at the bar. Perfect!
5. Mazzy Star – Fade Into You
Just a beautiful song. It’s been stuck in my head all day. It’s very subtle – you don’t find that often anymore.
6. Jay Reatard – My Shadow
One of the best musicians of our time. He had such vision and influence. He is greatly missed.
7. The Coathangers – Captain’s Dead
Our newest single off the Parasite EP. It’s a song about letting go.
TOP CHOICES! THANKS TO THE COATHANGERS AND TO KATE PRICE OF STEREO SANCTITY
