LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Today, is the turn of Brighton based kosmiche electro band Fujiya & Miyagi who have just released their 6th (self-titled) album on Objects of Desire, which has been made up of 3 pre-emptive EP strikes, which even on vinyl fit seamlessly together (literally). They’ve got beeps, they’ve got grooves, they’ve got a sense of humour. Forget EDM, forget EPKs, they’re all about the FU as much as they are the NEU! It’s a full on acid-house reflux, with leader David Best is bang up there with Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods (and not just because of his bone dome) on the acerbic lyrics stakes. If you like Arthur Russell, Andrew Weatherall and Trevor Jackson you’ll dig it.

It turns out their influences are every bit as eclectic as you’d expect…and given that Can have a great singles comp on the way, it starts off with a bang…

1. Can – Dizzy Dizzy

The greatest group ever.

2. Serge Gainsbourg – L’Hotel Particulier

This is from what many people regard as his masterpiece L’Histoire de Melody Nelson. He often wrote songs about unusual and interesting subjects which is one of the reasons why I find his music so attractive.

3. Amii Stewart – Knock on Wood

I don’t really like the song much but the video is sick.

4. Talk Talk – Life’s What You Make It

Often groups who take inspiration from Talk Talk end up making quite dreary and unimaginative music which is a shame as they weren’t either. The longer they went on the riskier they became.

5. Roxy Music – Love is the Drug

Despite the eyepatch they were a great group and this is a great song.

6. David Bowie – Absolute Beginners

There are so many incredible Bowie songs to choose from but there is something about this one that makes me want to listen to it over and over again. The fact that it was in the middle of an artistic drought makes it all the more astonishing.

The Lucky 7th: Fujiya & Miyagi – Extended Dance Mix

If this song wasn’t true before we released it, it definitely is now.
