THE PHYSICS HOUSE BAND – Lucky 7

THE PHYSICS HOUSE BAND – Lucky 7

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Today, it’s a new (to me) Brighton based art rock trio who Stewart Lee likes, joining a list of some of my favourite bands that the comedian’s comedian is also a fan of, like The Nightingales & The Wolfhounds. Called The Physics House Band, they may sound like squares but these guys are more angular than a dodecahedron. They’ve got a new mini album with Lee liner notes coming called “Mercury Fountain” via Small Pond records on 21st April. It’s psych, jazz, it’s an episode of University Challenge where Monkman meets the Young Ones, it’s Django Django DJing Basement Jaxx’s “Bingo Bango”. Basically it’s hard to categorise.

Here’s a taster of the new record…so you can decide.

The Physics House Band “Calypso”

And they’ve made some interesting choices, courtesy of guitarist (and appropriately enough) keyboardist, Sam Organ…

1. Mark Isham – On The Threshold Of Liberty

Reaching spiritual enlightenment 95% into a marathon as you near the finish line / Being selected for Carousel / Cool Runnings in super slow motion.

2. Steve Hauschildt – Anesthesia

You’re floating down a river, you see a willow tree swaying in the spring air, but basking in the shadow of the gargantuan Tyrell Corporation complex.

3. Goldmund – Image-Autumn-Womb

The cold side of the pillow in the morning after overthrowing the elysian space habitat regime.

4. Slugabed – Infinite Wave

The after party when the solar flare fails to irradiate earth.

5. The Mahavishnu Orchestra – Eternity’s Breath Part 1

Opening titles, rolling through the desert in Coachman Freelander RV, discovering the chrome Obelisk just outside of Carson City, Nevada.

6. Yung Lean – Eye Contact

You’ve just flee’d the ‘utopia’ to find sanctuary. You come across an object, pull away the overgrown ivy and find a floored VW Mark 1 Golf, Gloss Silver Paint Job, Red piping around the headlights, tank full.

7. The Dillinger Escape Plan – Limerent Death

No words.

MANY THANKS TO SAM ORGAN AND FRANKIE DAVISON OF STEREO SANCTITY.
