WARM DRAG – Lucky 7

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…Today it’s the turn of Warm Drag, a dynamic duo consisting of the singularly brilliant Vashti Windish (ex of the K-Holes and Golden Triangle in NY) and Paul Quattrone, one of the immense drumming pair in the current Oh Sees line-up from Orc onwards (also ex of the criminally underrated Modey Lemon and !!!). Their self-titled debut record on peerless garage label In The Red records is a coruscating, scathing atmospheric adventure. It’s one of those albums where even if you have the volume right down it’s still really loud, such is the low end power.

There’s definitely echoes of Nico with Vashti’s voice and with Akai MPC 1000 samplers replacing a kit for Tim, the effect is part Velvets, part Suicide, bits of DAF and a soupcon of Ministry, plus an echo of Danish cult duo the Raveonettes. The original plan was to marry up Windish’s love of Blondie’s genre defying “Parallel Lines” and Quattrone’s passion for the stomping production of the Bomb Squad and it definitely excites like that illogical mathematical mash-up should. VS hero The Make-Up/Chain & The Gang’s Ian Svenonius talks thus of last summer’s live forays “Their cut-up collage of electronic stompmusic embodied everything people were searching for…there were just two of them but the sound was magnificent.” And who are we to argue?

They’ve chosen a very telling 7 tunes (and one of their own, subverting our format fast and loose as they do musical genres) but given they were hurriedly catching flights for their European tour (which included an arresting live session on 6Music’s Marc Riley show last night) there’s no chit-chat about the choices, just letting the music speak for itself and all that jazz/post industrial hardcore/songs the Cramps taught us/Finnish techno…anyway, on with the show…
