THE WEDDING PRESENT – Lucky 7 & Velvet Sheep’s Album of the Year For “Going, Going…”

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Today it’s a welcome return to Velvet Sheep fanzine by The Wedding Present, whose album “Going, Going…” is our album of the year. It’s an epic of a record that goes through the gamut of emotion, and shows that heartbreak, loves lost and emotional turmoil embroils us not just as teenagers but all our adult lives! Happy bloody Christmas! Except there’s something very life affirming about this album and much as David Gedge apparently found it “quite a project”, it’s a rewarding listen ranging from shipping broadcasts to glacial instrumentals to punky (and funny) laments about only ever getting through to “your secretary”. “Bear” with it, cos the more you listen, the more you love it.

David’s already picked a great “song for ewe” by Rialto… so when I asked him to chose a Lucky 7 in time for Xmas I was intrigued to find out what he’d go for…

He didn’t disappoint…

“For something of a theme, I have picked tracks largely featuring female vocalists. I hope that’s OK!”

I replied: ‘Bout time there were more people to stick up for the women!

“Ha, ha… yeah… it did cross my mind, post-Trump!”

So without further ado, over to David for The Wedding Present’s Lucky 7…

1. Colleen Green – You’re So Cool

A great punky pop song which kind of has a late 1970s new wave feel to it. I went to see Colleen play in Brighton a few weeks ago and invited her to be the tour support on our 2017 tour of North America.

2. Simone White – Flowers In May

A beautiful song by my friend Simone. Simone added her gorgeous voice to The Wedding Present’s Christmas duet… ‘Holly Jolly Hollywood’ a couple of years ago.

3. Stereolab – Speedy Car

Great title and a classic track by one of my favourite bands ever. After hearing John Peel play Stereolab’s first single on the radio I got in touch and asked them to support us. It was their first ever concert!

4. Tammy St. John – Stay Together Young Lovers

I love this arrangement and the vocal on this. Great reverby sounds…

5. Savior Adore – Sarah’s Secret

We met this duo when we played the Seaport Music Festival in New York with them in 2010 but I think Deidre Muro, the female singer on this track, has left the band now.

6. Linda Guilala – Lo Siento Mucho

A lovely noise made by a band from Galicia who supported us in Spain on our recent Continental European tour. They may owe a debt to My Bloody Valentine but there’s nothing wrong with that in my book!

Lucky 7th: The Wedding Present – Sports Car (Acoustic Version)

This was the first Wedding Present song to feature a female lead vocal and it came about after Jayne Lockey became the first full time female member of the band in the mid-90s.
