“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is one half of a band formerly named Two, now with the new deliciously Dickensian moniker Tale of Two (easier to find in a search engine too). Alongside his partner in crime, Gemma Rogers, a true star-in-the-making, Alfie (formerly of indie band The Holloways) is a songsmith whose time is also truly coming. Together they make a fantastically astute songwriting pair, who make deceptively simple yet perfectly formed music together, and whose tit for tat vocal volleys could make them the new Lee & Nancy.
With a new third salvo coming in the form of single “Lovelust”, they’ve got a ton of tunes in their arsenal, and are busy loading up an album of dark delights for my pal John Henderson on Tiny Global (home of the Nightingales, Band of Holy Joy et al) and have won new fans in the likes of Spike Z Block (Spike & Debbie) & Stuart Moxham (Young Marble Giants) and it’s no wonder. “Lovelust” is truly a tale that’s the best of times and the worst of times – it’s a cautionary tale about teetering between love and lust (clues slightly in the title) – Alfie and Gemma take on the parts of two tempted and tortured souls, who already have lovers, but contemplate a future that might be passionately tempestuous or tawdrily destructive.
Gemma has already popped up on these pages with a couple of dandy “songs for ewe” and has been chosen herself by the aforementioned John Henderson, and whenever they’ve got some new toils to tempt me with I’m happy to throw love to the now Tale of Two. It seemed only fitting to get a song choice from our man this time, so it’s a big welcome to Alfie Jackson!
But before Alfie’s 4AD flavoured choice of tune, check out “Lovelust”…
And without further ado, here’s Alfie’s “song for ewe”…fittingly written almost in free verse…
“It’s gotta be Aldous Harding
Her music, her voice, the guitar parts, the songs and lyrics… They’re all very engaging.
She looks different all the time.
She’s channelling multiple personalities and spirits.
All her videos and live performances are different and so interesting.
This one I really like though.
BIG THANKS TO ALFIE AND TO GEMMA. CATCH YOU SOON!
Here are the requisite socials:
And you can get “Lovelust” here…out this Friday…
