AMELIA BUSHELL aka EXTRA SPECIAL – Song For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. The last time today’s multifarious guest was here, it was with a rather noisier proposition, her punk band Grim Streaker. Amelia Bushell (also of Belle Mare) is a Brooklyn indie fixture, and with new project Extra Special is handily, exactly that. Starting out as an edifyingly introspective bedroom project, it’s expanded out from the claustrophobic four walls into the wider world (which is strangely still a claustrophobic place clad as it is in face masks and plastered in sanitiser).

Extra Special debut EP “Lazy About It” is less sting alcoholic sanitiser and more soulful emollient. As per the video “True Fear” it’s ready to put it’s hands out to calm your waking nightmare, and give you a well needed (virtual) embrace, and so we extended our hand to welcome Amelia Bushell (keeping a two metre distance naturally) back to VS!

The “Lazy About You” EP became a tangible thing when Bushell co-opted her burgeoning Brooklyn black book to help take the recordings from GarageBand to an actual band, including keyboardist Sharif Mekawy (Looms, Cindy Cane) and Amelia’s regular drummer Louis Cozza. The record was co-produced and mixed by Gary Atturio (Savoir Adore, Ski Lodge, Belle Mare, Psychic TV) and mastered by Alex DeTurk (David Bowie, Townes Van Zandt, D’Angelo, DIIV, Shilpa Ray, Blonde Redhead) and it also features the song “I Hate Love”, which features artwork reminiscent of when as kids you might pretend to be necking but sadly were using your own armography. It fooled no-one. However this song is way more enticing and convincing, full of vulnerability and yet conviction. If you’re into Joan As Policewoman, you should definitely check out Amelia Bushell as the Extra Special woman…

Amelia Bushell’s influences are so multi-faceted but even a GPS as alluded to in the song “True Fear” wouldn’t have guided me to them, so her choice of tune has come as a welcome surprise and something bang on the pulse of 2020, so without further ado, here is the Extra Special “song for ewe”…

“Good For You” by Porridge Radio and Lala Lala

I was so excited when I came across this song which features two of my favorite female voices of recent times: Dana Margolin of Porridge Radio and Lillie West of Lala Lala. The metal chain like sound of the tambourine, the morose vibe of the lyrics and melody- I love it.”

THANKS SO MUCH TO AMELIA AND TO RACHEL ROSSEN AT TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS PR

The “Lazy About It” EP is out now…
