“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a shadowy man on a shadowy planet, part of the mysterious garage rock (mostly) duo from Birmingham, outer space, Black Mekon. Specialising in brutal, four to the floor Coachwhips style garage, and hiding both behind masks and alter egos, my Velvet Sheep fanzine co-conspirator Phil Knoxville was so taken with them that when he MC’d one of our live events at the Whitechapel Gallery he mistakenly announced them as our headliner (it was The Big Bang instead, who allegedly have shared members). Their album “Stolen Bible 2” on PNKSLM was a real hidden classic, and this band could easily kill it on Castle Face or Third Man Records. Long-time friends of Velvet Sheep, I can’t believe it’s taken me so long…wilkommen aus Black Mekon from Black Mekon!

I gave Black Mekon a chance to get a plug in, and by gad they’ve got something very cool to promote – so might as well let them say it in their own blah…

But what did Black Mekon, arbiters of great punk rock taste choose for their “song for ewe”? Without further ado…

“Thanks for asking me to be a part of Velvet Sheep, dig it!

Today I was listening to the The Oblivians ‘Play 9 Songs With Mr Quintron’.

The Oblivians is a natural goto whenever I need that reckless, 100%, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants rock n’ roll. Team them up with Mr. Quintron? Mercy.

Fun fact: I first heard this song as a young(ish) Mekon in the 90s watching Alternative Nation on my MTV, so I believe you may have been partly responsible for my lifelong love of this band!

My song for Ewe, Oblivians: What’s The Matter Now?”
