“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is one half of San Francisco psych-pop duo, playing with long term collaborator Bill Rousseau as Billy & Dolly. Zentai suits, deserts and Moogs, retro-futurism and dreamy soundscapes are just a few of the sentiments that could help describe their oeuvre. They were previously called The Monolith, but after a cocooned period of inactivity they were reborn and are now on album number two – electro-acoustic guitar, synth and floating rich vocal tapestry bolstered by a brain blistering live band – which is called “Five Suns” and is out today on the excellently titled Shit Krystals records. We are pleased to welcome to these pages, the Dolly of the titular duo: Dahlia Gallin Ramirez!

Billy & Dolly have shared stages with kindred spirits The Apples In Stereo, Dr. Dog and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) and have recorded this album at Oakland’s New, Improved Recording studio with Jay Pellicci  who’s also worked with Sleater-Kinney plus Deerhof and The Dodos. Esteemed company, and an excellent aesthetic taste too, check out the album artwork which feels like Jad Fair meets Keith Haring. San Francisco is still chock full of the psych heirs to the Haight-Ashbury universe, with the likes of Wooden Shjips/Moon Duo, Thee Oh Sees/Castle Face Records etc, and Billy & Dolly are fantasmagoric contemporaries operating on a unique planet but with the same gravitational pull as their peers.

Anyhow, enough of my wittering, Velvet Sheep is all about letting the artist do the talking, so without further ado, here’s Dahlia’s “song for ewe”…(and more)

“My pick is “All In Good Time” by Sunforest.

I love it when girl groups get weird. This song, “All In Good Time,” is by Sunforest, a late 60s, female psych-folk trio.

Two of their songs were featured in “A Clockwork Orange,” but not much more is known about them.”

Feel free to share my playlist of obscure favorites, too.”

(Sunforest “All In Good Time” is the first track)
