“SONG FOR EWE”
with DAVE W. of
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.
Today, it’s the psychonaut behemoth that’s one half of a band, White Hills that made my favourite record of 2011, the megalithic “H-p1”, an anthropo-scenic route to the edge of the universe and nearly back, a psych odyssey on the peerless Thrill Jockey records, accompanied by incumbent special edition disc of “Oddity II: Scene On Mill Mountain”. His band’s music is part Amon Düül, Can (obvs), Earth and Heads, kosmiche meets Kasparov – a squally, relentless, morass where tunes show themselves like glistening crystals. Reissuing early gems, they’re also about to tour the UK and play with new heroes Teeth of the Sea, and old feedback masters The Jesus & Mary Chain. Along with Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips, this is the coolest man of psych – it’s Mr. White Hills himself – not Ego Sensation, but sensational guitarist Dave W.
Aside from “H-p1”, I’m also proud to own the digital & drone classic “So You Are…So You’ll Be” and the stomp-psych of “Glitter Glamour Atrocity” also on Thrill Jockey, so this rock jockey was thrilled that Dave was happy to get involved with a “song for ewe”. And there’s plenty going on for the band to shout from the White Hills (and Olympus Mons) about!
The band’s first album “No Game To Play” which had originally been released on cdr has been reissued with some handsome vinyl for the first time, with an milky clear with opaque blood red finish. You can get it here from TJ but looks like there’s only 9 left as this was published:
And almost as urgent is the fact that the band are heading this way to huff and puff houses down in the UK, like the baddest of wolves. Deets below, and playing with some of VS’ favourite bands and fellow song for ewe contribs: Sleaford Mods & Wire.
That’s not all, on their bandcamp page they’ve also been marshalling amp troubling back cat albums, the latest being “A Little Bliss Forever” plus a new cover of Minimal Man’s “Pull Back The Bolt”. As Marijne on MTV used to say “check it out”
But enough about the imperious White Hills own musical odysseys, what in Neu’s name is Dave W.’s “song for ewe”?
Without further ado…
IT’S OVER TO DAVE:
“Ton Steine Scherben is one of the lesser known bands lumped into the term Krautrock. From West Berlin, they are considered to be the grandfathers of the German leftist squatter movement that exists to this day.
The emotion in Rio Reiser’s voice is what initially struck me about this track. I didn’t need to know what he was saying as his emotion says it all. A few years ago I was at a party in Germany, where I was told the sentiment of the song is “destroy what is destroying you”.
I get chills every time I listen to it. The band is on fire: super tight and seamless with a swagger that only comes from a group of people who know each others’ next musical move, like an ocean current, flowing at will.”
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS, DAVE W. LOVING YOUR WORK MEINE LIEBLING.
