“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a hold no punches, souped up alt. country bar brawler, with a thousand yard stare and a voice that alternately causes both chills and raptures. Arizona’s Devora is like Detroit Cobras in raw malevolence but slick like Lana del Rey in production, with pop that’s got grit in the oyster and pearls of wisdom.

Devora’s self-consciously street tough titled debut “Outlaw” EP out on Tiger Tone Records is a heady brew of Southern dive vibes and chart bothering aspiration – Nashville meets Vegas. It’s intriguing like a Hunter S Thompson and intoxicating like the top row of the saloon bar, and that was all it needed to ask Devora to VS to choose a tune with real chime. All that’s left is to say a friendly howdy and avoid that gaze and the inevitable “Fist Fight”…

And no doubt breathless after that, without further ado, here’s Devora’s “song for ewe”…

“There’s an artist that i’ve been truly mesmerized with lately; singer/songwriter and producer Ethel Cain. Her song “Crush” is a hauntingly lush shoegaze-y soundscape with gregorian chant-like vocals and dreamy cinematic melodies. I love how the song is literally drowning in reverb and the lyrics are so visually raw and honest.

Her use of distortion throughout the track adds a knife-sharp edge to her lush sonic palette. The sheer vulnerability of the lyrics are mesmerizing, and she’s able to capture so many details in her lyrics– it feels like you’re listening to an emotional purge of some sort, nightmarish at times, but in the most beautiful setting. One can definitely hear pop, rock and even country influences in some of her other songs. I am obsessed with her depiction of morbid Americana, and admire how she is the antithesis of Lana Del Rey’s “American Dream”.

THANKS TO DEVORA AND TO SALLY HEDBERG FROM PIAS.
