“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is the most joyfully off-kilter exciting singer I’ve heard since early Grimes or tUnE-yArDs, both from the past, and the future and a parallel universe all at the same glorious time. And coming from Iceland too where there’s obviously an unsaid but inferred influence from a striking sugary figurehead.

With an album called “Our Atlantis” coming on 18th January via Geertruida Records, a wayfaring single called “Have fun at home” has come via a fairly old skool yet mind altering video game (i say video game advisedly). The idea is that “players who successfully complete the game, collecting the loops that make up “Have fun at home”, will be given a private SoundCloud link from which to download the track.” And it’s well worth the glitch,  lo-oscillation beeps and high-frequency vocal flourishes.

Her folks call her Steinunn Harðardóttir, but we can call her dj. flugvél og geimskip! (ps. not a DJ and Icelandic for Airplane & Spaceship) Welcome to VS…

But before you check out her song choice, here’s the game…

…and the artwork. Everyone’s looking for their own private Atlantis and this is dj. flugvél og geimskip’s…

For an artist so out of this world, what obscure song has been rocking her inner sanctum? Without further ado, this is Steinnun’s erudite and evocative “song for ewe”…

“I heard this song first when camping with my father and little sister when I was a teenager. We had been driving the whole day and into the night and we went over some mountain roads and down to a fjord where there was no one except us and the tent, and the moon and the night and the stars, and we listened to this album by Joe Meek and said nothing, and it was perfect. It was so lonely, and the music was different from anything I have heard.

Faraway sounds and strange atmosphere. It sounded just like when you look up at the sky and feel how small you are and the feeling… being overwhelmed with awe. (I’m not sure I am writing this right in english…) Lonely, sad, but also being alive in a much bigger universe, and that is what this song sounds like to me.

Also, Joe Meek sings: “I hear a new world calling me.” And that is what I feel so often. Like there is another world waiting beneath or behind this one. And that is also what happens when I make music or listen to some music, it feels like the music is from another place, and that you can travel there by listening to that song. And Joe Meek makes that possible with his music. The music is like a spaceship to another dimension.

Joe Meek’s music sounds a little bit distorted and faraway, like you hear it through a rusty old dream, but then it goes straight into your heart and soul.

I love this music.”
