Gauche by Jen Dessinger

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists and music folk to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…today it’s an incendiary band from Washington DC who I’ve been excited about since I heard they signed to Merge Records last year and who are on the verge of releasing the confidently titled “A People’s History of Gauche”.

Sounding like a melting pot of Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up”, ESG, Liquid Liquid, The Rapture, Bikini Kill & Bratmobile, with a soupcon of James Chance & The Contortions and the B52s, this is joyous punk party music, a sure footed and quickfire soundtrack to the summer, so it’s with a spring in my step and a soaring heart that I introduce you to the irrepressible rhythmic buoyancy and neon hyperpunk ebullience of Gauche!

Jason P Barnett, Adrienne CN Berry, Mary Jane Regalado (Downtown Boys), Pearie Sol, and Daniele Yandel (Priests) are Gauche and “A People’s History of Gauche” was recorded with Austin Brown (Parquet Courts) and Robert Szmurlo in Brooklyn and with Jonah Takagi (Ex Hex) in DC – the first time they’d worked with anyone outside their circle, giving the whole album a bigger oomph but also more nuanced musical intricacy. Lyrically it’s about the struggles of today’s world, but modern flaws are replaced with a dancefloor, and the 21st century darkness is picked out with a flashlight of optimism.

But never mind the hyperbole what songs get Gauche going? It’s over to them…buckle up!

1.Look Blue Go Purple – Cactus Cat

“LBGP is one of my all time favorite bands. This song and video makes me so happy. It reminds me of the 10 months I lived in the desert with my best friend.”

2.Leikeli47- Girl Blunt

“I love girl blunts”

3.Kacey Musgraves- High Horse

“I’ve been listening to Kacey Musgraves nonstop. I’m obsessed with her and this video.”

4.BB Eye- I’m So Annoying

“Everything about this song is perfect!”

5.Lizzo (feat Missy Eliot)- Tempo

“Summer ’19 anthem”

6.Vivien Goldman- Launderette

“Vivien Goldman is a legend and this is an all-time favorite song. Long live hypnotizing bass lines! I picked up her book on “Revenge Of The She Punks” last month and it’s a wonderful examination on feminist music history.”
