with HALEY FOHR aka

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a vocalist, composer and producer originally from Lafayette, Indiana, now based in Chicago who has been making records under the nom de plume Circuit Des Yeux since she was eighteen years old. Now on her fifth album, called “Reaching For Indigo” on the ever-brilliant Drag City Records (Royal Trux, Palace, Smog etc), welcome to Velvet Sheep, Haley Fohr!

“Reaching For Indigo” is American folk pushed into existential and esoteric new outliers, based around experimental sounds and Haley’s incredible baritone and a whip-snap vocal range not heard (by me at least) since Human League’s Philip Oakey. It also features (in the song “Philo”) a piano motif from Drag City’s multi-instrumental virtuoso Ka Baird (who has also recently appeared on these pages).

Circuit des Yeux is really doing something different and undeniably enchanting, complex yet subtle, and she’s an intriguing artist who I really recommend you surrender your lobes and cortex to.

Here’s another one from the album…”Black Fly”

But, what of Haley’s choice, without further ado, here’s her “song for ewe”…

“I love the intimacy and rawness of this recording & composition. It’s a close up of two of my favorite artists, expressing themselves in their own unique manner. Loren’s guitar and whimpering howls in the background creates an accompaniment that is easy to identify as Loren, while letting Kath’s lyrics lead the way about those real tough moments in love- the passion between two people and the fragile state it can leave a loved one: after the epic rise & fall of a gargantuan love, and the feeling that something as simple as a breeze will be the thing to take you down.

I also can’t help but acknowledge that Loren & Kath were intimate at this time & the autobiographical context gives it authenticity & weight, like peering into a special lover’s heart. Each time I hear this song it sends chills down my spine and overwhelms me with emotion.”
