Julia Shapiro

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is the Chastity Belt singer/guitarist who has a debut solo album called “Perfect Version” out on June 14th on Hardly Art Records. Written in a dark moment of unravelling, introspection and reawakening after a tumultous cancelled band tour, it’s incisively personal and deeply affecting stuff. We’re glad that they’ve not only shared this with us but also an insight into what they’re listening to at the mo’, welcome to VS to the beguiling shoegazing & truly arresting Julia Shapiro!

Check out “A Couple Highs” video which features Julia bowling, picking up donuts, dog walking and wearing the brilliant billiard sweater featured on the album cover and promo shots. Strike!

Julia wrote alone in her Seattle flat and played and recorded virtually every instrument on “Perfect Version” herself, and in doing so ruminated on the idea of what it’d be like to be the “Perfect Version” of yourself, including this brilliant lyric “How can someone be so blindly confident/I wanna know that trick” as per the opening track “Natural” featured below…

For music recorded during an existential crisis, relationship break-up and near mental breakdown, it’s a surprisingly calm storm, almost disquieting. Part pastoral, a little melancholy but strangely calming.

I was intrigued to find out what music Julia was currently findly deeply affecting, so without further ado, here’s Julia’s “song for ewe”…

“This is one of my favorite songs. There’s something really hypnotizing about all the arpeggios, and the way the interact with each other. I also love how haunting the vocals sound. It’s simple and perfect song.”

Thanks so much Julia and also Kate Price at Stereo Sanctity…
