“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is from an explosive band that have themselves been chosen before, by Lisa Koenig of Calamity Jane who said this of them: “They are a couple of sisters now living in Tacoma, Wash who never fail to do everything RIGHT! I’m enamoured by them. They make great videos, already have been touring internationally (one of them is only 16 yrs old!) and have the most inventive and creative souls I’ve ever seen. Their music is like a cross between the Pixies and Nirvana and it’s just the two girls making this amazing music! They recently added their brother, Kurtis, to the group so I’m eager to see what 3 siblings can do!”
They are Skating Polly and Lisa is not wrong about the great videos…
The band have a standalone single called “Play House” out now on El Camino Records and it’s all kinds of shades of neon awesomeness, coming on like Babes In Toyland meets Bratmobile. Directed by Scott Stuckey it features one of my all time heroes David Yow of The Jesus Lizard (and bona fide actor) in a Lynchian cameo as a subservient and cranky servant.
And Kurtis has certainly added a whacking great impetus, especially on this track which reminds me of Todd Trainer’s tremendous tub-thumping at the beginning of “The Crow” by Shellac…which is a great touchstone.
Welcome to Velvet Sheep, Kurtis Mayo!
But when Kurtis is not playing house, what is he playing on his on speakers? Without further ado, it’s over to Kurtis Mayo for a “song for ewe”…
“We just moved across town about a week ago, and I’ve been procrastinating unpacking everything. I have started organizing my record collection though! One of my favorite semi-obscure cheap finds was a Poppy Family greatest hits record. Susan Jacks was the star of the group, with her husband Terry writing and producing. They had one hit with “Which Way You Goin’ Billy?” and Terry Jacks went on to have the solo hit “Seasons in The Sun” (which Nirvana covered!).
Both of those tracks are kinda cheesy Canadian pop songs. But then they hit you with “There’s No Blood In Bone” which is a great psych rock song. It’s kinda goth, kinda over dramatic, some weird phaser effects on the vocals. But it’s got a killer drum beat. It would be a great hip hop sample. It almost feels like Jefferson Airplane doing Evanescence in the best way possible.”
THANKS TO KURTIS MAYO AND TO KATE PRICE AT STEREO SANCTITY PR.
