“SONG FOR EWE”
with LESLEY RANKINE of
SILVERFISH & RUBY
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.
Today it’s the turn of someone who is uncompromisingly brilliant, a legend both in Camden and the Caledonian borders. Her band Silverfish were seriously shouty but didn’t take themselves too seriously, self-effacingly titling their album “Fat Axl” after a gig heckle. Their strident t-shirt “Hips, Tits, Lips, Power” were cooler and more in your face than the Inspirals stoney goofy “Cool As F***”, and were a meme when that only meant “self” in your French “Tricolore” text books. Riot grrrl before it even existed, Camden lurcher even though that was a bulls*** press invention, Wiiija Records stalwart way before Cornershop were on Top Of The Pops, a cover star who made Brett Anderson squirm, ladies, gentlemen and more ladies it’s the still amazing, from Silverfish and the underrated but unforgotten Ruby, Lesley Rankine!
While I was getting my first gigging experience watching my mind expanded by Terminal Cheesecake at the Marquee with fellow Velvet Sheep-er Phil Knoxville, their fellow Wiiija Records artists Silverfish ruled the sticky floored London gig circuit. And although I’ve got back into psych the pure aggression and verve of Silverfish strike right to the core of what got me writing the original fanzine back in the day. I had always wished I had them on the cover of the zine as xeroxed on my second hand copier in the early 90s.
I was thus chuffed to find Lesley on social media, and that she agreed to become part of the resurgent VS zine, by indulging my silly pun and choosing her “song for ewe”, so without further ado, it’s…
OVER TO LESLEY:
“My fave album of last year was “bashed out” by This is The Kit, and my favourite song, and one I can’t stop listening to is “Magic Spell”. Even just for the lyrics, “pick yourself up off your rusty dusty”. This song just picks me up every day. In fact, I think I’ll go n’ stick it on again!
Sorry it’s taken so long to do this but I hope ewe like the tune too!!”
THANK-EWE LESLEY, YOU RULE!
