“UNDER THE RADAR” – AN APPRAISAL OF THE NEXT WOULD-BE SPIKE JONZE
By Thomas “T-Bird” Jones/Jonze
Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry.. yeah, great video directors..theres no argument.. but i want to add a name that many of you will not have heard of.. Mr Radar.
One saturday afternoon in January a few years back he asked me to meet him at the Coldrice (r.i.p.) Studios in central Birmingham, he had an idea!
Now i’m all for schemes and plans but i had no idea what was afoot. He told me of the plan for a Swampmeat video that he had been throwing about for a while. I had heard rumours of his video making skills and had seen first hand the masterful work he had done for Copter in their 6ft Chicken video. Of course I was on board and so began our lengthy friendship…
The love and craftsmanship he puts into the videos shows with every one produced and although he’s not one for plaudits and awards surely he should be placed in the upper echelons of video makers. Be it stop motion, live performances, comic book creations, tour diaries..each one will be crafted with so much love and precision its impossible not to be left in awe of his skills..
I caught up with Black Mekon and his brother Black Mekon and they had this to say regarding Radar’s talent.. “Mr. Radar’s visuals are incredibly important to us, they’ve been an essential part of the mix right from the very beginning. He’s our guy back in the lab, the secret weapon. Without him an essential part of Black Mekon would be missing”
Having worked with the likes of Copter, Heavy Trash, The Big Bang, Swampmeat and Sex Beet his talent has been seen and noticed around the country and even further afield.
Keep your eyes peeled for any Mr Radar short that comes your way as you will thank me for the heads up…
Did i mention he wrangles robots? No? well lets talk about M.I.L.O. another time..
BIG UP GARY WOOD, MR. RADAR & T-BIRD
