EXCLUSIVE MIX –
V.S. VERSUS STEF GRINDLEY (COLDRICE / PEOPLE AGAINST GOODNESS & NORMALCY)

For the sixth explosive episode in a series of mixes which pitch Velvet Sheep versus some of our favourite musical compadres…

Today’s comes from a long-term Velvet Sheep supporter, member of the defunct but never to be forgotten garage rock collective from the second city, Birmingham’s ColdRice, and founder of the incendiary live band Copter, who had key supports with Kid Congo, Jon Spencer & The Dirtbombs – it’s Stef Grindley! I met Stef when I was still at MTV2, and it turns out he’d been a big fan of MTV Alternative Nation which I helped produce with Toby Amies in the mid 90s, where he first heard and fell in love with bands like the Boredoms and Melt Banana.

Fellow Velvet Sheep-er and old school mate Phil Knoxville had introduced me after seeing Copter live in Brum, and he thought they’d be perfect to play at the first ever edition of Velvet Sheep live (held quarterly or so at the Whitechapel Gallery in the mid-noughties). He was right. With their matching monochrome lightning strike t-shirts, no need to sound-check, despite a skin-tight rhythm and an electrified singer howling into a Bakelite telephone microphone he was not wrong. Stef was the calm backbone, the cool one. He plays, he skates, he draws. He’s ColdRice’s triple threat. When ColdRice used to do their ace podcasts, his were the more freakzone-ish, cerebral, out there, late night – funky, fresh, flipped out. So it was about time that we asked him to drop the needle and put some reverb on me brother…

Tonight Matthew, Stef Grindley is “People Against Goodness & Normalcy” and here’s what he has to say about his

“My friend Evita was berating me for not making mixes any more, then Nick asked me to make a mix for Velvet Sheep so I killed two birds w/one stone(r). It’s a mix of old and new stuff, and a whole mess of genres. Some House, Hip Hop, Punk, Spoken word. I made a poor attempt to actually mix too, as is my wont. Please enjoy.”

Spoiler alert: contains Oren Ambarchi, Boogie Down Productions, Modest Mouse, Minutemen & Smog…
