“SONG FOR EWE”
with ANDREW LILES of NURSE WITH WOUND & CURRENT 93
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.
Today’s guest is a serious individual, with a voracious appetite for recording and collecting vinyl. A multi-instrumentalist with a vast back catalogue as a solo artiste, but also as a sometime member of Nurse With Wound & Current 93. He’s also played with a whole host of avant garde, noise and alternative cognoscenti including Cosey Fanni Tutti, Faust & Arabrot. Plus a lost as long as your arm, elbow and arse (about 200 releases and counting). A real student of the form, a cerebral remixer, writer, musician, artiste, it’s welcome to Velvet Sheep to Andrew Liles…
Andrew has a real slew of releases imminent both solo, compilation and part of his Monster series – check in here to find out more:
He also asks a ton of his favourite artistes about their tastes, so it’s fitting I found out some obscure songs he’s been enjoying lately (albeit a while ago back sorry Andrew).
I should also point you in the way of this fantastic Bakers’ Dozen he did for my mates at the Quietus, where he chose his 13 LPs on the basis of their sleeve art alone and there’s some corkers…
This one below, is one of Andrew’s own releases, and it’s by Zeke Clough and its like a nightmarish vision of a King Crimson album mixed with Edvard Munch & Pete Bagge. I love it.
I knew to expect some choices for Andrew’s “song for ewe” from the proper left-field, somewhere freakier than Stuart Maconie’s natural zonal habitat. And I wasn’t disappointed…without further ado, it’s over to Andrew and a microcosm in time forever captured on VS:
“This week I have been tarting up my spare room. My collection of 7″s were in there and needed moving. Going through them I found these three gems.
COSMONAUTS HAIL SATAN – BIZARRE AND TORTUOUS RITUALS OF THE PRIMITIVE WORLD – 1995
I always loved their name, what a great name and the title of the single is not bad either. Cosmonauts worshipping Satan – a perfect combination, to me at least anyway. This is the B Side – Stacey Keach, it’s the kind of relentless, chunky, plodding thing that could last for over an hour and still be great.
GRUPO FOLKLORICO DE SAN JOSE – CANTO Y MUSICA TIPICA DE IBIZA – 1959
Something I picked up in a charity shop year and years ago. I’ve sampled it a few times, slowed down it sounds like some kind of demonic incantation. Very odd and interesting traditional music from Ibiza. Somewhat better than the tawdry musical turds that float around the island these days. A friend of mine recently played me some ‘Balearic’ music, my idea of what it was is totally different to the reality. ‘Balearic’ is the BIGGEST crock of embarrassing shit I have ever heard, a perfect example why one should never get into drugs. Your mind would need to be totally fried to get off on that saccharine, inane, emotionless, dogshit.
THE POPPY FAMILY – WHERE EVIL GROWS – 1971 My friend Rick gave me this. His record collection seldom ventures beyond the year 1974. I think this would make a great cover version, a Metal interpretation would be perfect.
THANKYOU ANDREW, APOLOGIES FOR MY TARDINESS. THANKS FOR YOUR CLASSINESS.
