“SONG FOR EWE”
with ANGELINE MORRISON of
WE ARE MUFFY
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is one half of the windswept and whimsical duo from Cornwall, We Are Muffy whose new album “The Charcoal Pool” is out on Tapete Records on 20th July. Along with Nick Duffy of The Lilac Time and Bait, our guest has a uncommonly beautiful lilt, previously heard in The Mighty Sceptres and the evocatively named The Ambassadors of Sorrow. Welcome to VS, Angeline Morrison!
Check out the technicolour charms of We Are Muffy with “Frosted Candy” from “The Charcoal Pool”…
With a winning mix of winsome charm and warm nostalgia, We Are Muffy are reminiscent of Sarah Records and Peter, Paul and Mary, combining mystical folksy harmonies with indie pop hooks and matching traditional instrumentation with home spun homemade sounds. They list their own influences as the Incredible String Band, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Sam Cooke, Max Romeo and Shirley & Dolly Collins, so with a set list so intriguing, how could Angeline top that with her “song for ewe” choice…well, a bit like this…
“This might not be the most obscure of tracks, but it really is what I’m listening to at the moment, and it makes me melt entirely. From the very opening notes this has me in its velvety grip. I love the way all the tones of each instrument blend together, the rhythms and the other-worldly-sounding harmonies…. then there’s the glory that is Dekker’s voice, floating high above everything, like air or sunlight.
I love the philosophy of the lyrics – it’s always good to be reminded of the things that really matter. The whole recording is a thing of such beauty, it’s like being hugged softly by a benevolent cloud.”
THANKS SO MUCH TO ANGELINE AND TO SEAN NEWSHAM AT MUTANTE.
