BLÓM – Song(s) For Ewe

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guests are from an arresting and vivid new band called BLÓM who came to my attention via a recent “song for ewe” by Matt Baty, singer of the inestimably loud and brilliant Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, a band who they were supposed to be on the road with right now before the Covid craziness struck. BLÓM have the best self-described manifestoes since Huggy Bear first declared the arrival of “a new renegade girl/boy hypernation” which was happening without our permission.

In their own words they are “three qt punks playing pure radge shit with female, trans and non binary members who are influenced by themes of queerness, feminism, gender identity, mental health, socio economic challenges, Christianity, Twin Peaks and the Fyodor Dostoyevsky novel ‘Crime and Punishment’.” They had me at punks. Their sound is neon, lurid, incendiary and exciting – somewhere between Melt Banana’s “Sick Zip Everywhere” (a video I had the pleasure to play a ton when I ran MTV2) and the Luche Libre noise meltdowns of Lightning Bolt. But it’s also redolent of Kill Rock Stars metal-mongers GodheadSilo or Karp, so basically what’s not to love. Their debut album “Flower Violence” is out this Friday 1 May on Box Records, and it’s a breath of supercharged fresh air at a time when we’re barely allowed outside for a real one. It’s an evisceral thrill to welcome to VS, on their uncompromising own terms, the pleasing to say out loud as well as hear their loudness – BLÓM!

All of BLÓM – Eri, Liz and Hells choose a “song for ewe” each, but before they do, I asked what they were up to right now, especially given that their plans had been forcibly changed and here’s the news…

“We’re doing a listen along party this Friday to support the album, over Twitter/Fb/Insta (just a social media thing, so people can join in from wherever)…”

(check out flyer below)

…Other than that, we’ve been pissing around posting our ‘Imagination Tour’ which also ends this weekend, but is all on our socials if you want to redirect people to look at our warped version of tour life from the confinement of isolation (it does feature a pep talk from Baty/Box Records, which I think is a particular highlight!)

We’ve done a few bits and bobs for The Old Police House ‘Housebound’ series, including a DJ set and two solo sets from Eri, which are all online through their page. We won’t be doing any full band streams or anything like that, but we will continue to collaborate with these guys on more projects (if they want us to!) and we’re continuing the post Spotify playlists, of music we’re listening to in isolation!”

Do get it! But before you do, without further ado, here’s BLÓM’s “song(s) for ewe”…

Eri: Don Gero – Fireball I
I chose this because I’ve had it stuck in my head for maybe three or four months.

Liz: Bruce Brus – A New Beginning (Theta Drone L216HZ R220HZ)
I’ve been listening to this kind of thing to concentrate or sleep during lockdown. Essential for my sanity!

Hells: KZLK – wintersin
I chose this because we played with KZLK at our last live show before lockdown – Borealis Festival Norway

His AV set was incredible and he was a bloody lovely human! Their debut album LSTEFA is here.

THANKS TO THE SUPER SPEEDY AND SUPER BRILLIANT BLÓM AND TO MATT BATY

“Flower Violence” is out this Friday 1 May on Box Records and you can preorder it here.

Check out Matt from Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs choosing BLÓM as his recent “song for ewe” below:
