THE FALL and others

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a producer who has worked extensively with Ramones (including on their first album), Blondie on the “No Exit” album, Suicide on their first, plus Richard Hell & The Voidoids “Blank Generation”. He’s also worked with the likes of Jesus Jones, The Pogues and Gun Club’s Jeffrey Lee Pierce and on loads of orchestral records, but in an eclectic oeuvre it’s his albums for The Fall that I love the most…welcome to Velvet Sheep Mr. Craig Leon…!

As well as “Code Selfish” (1992), Craig also produced “Shiftwork” (1991) and “Extricate” (1990) which features the return of original member Martin Bramah and the absolute Fall classic and Festive 50 fav “Bill Is Dead”…

I asked Craig (a little earlier this year) what he was up to…

“What I’m up to..

Just put the 40th Anniversary reissue of the Ramones first album package to bed I’m also finishing off some new electronic/orchestral music. Out doing some performing again late summer/early fall.”

And without further ado, here’s Craig’s “song for ewe”….

“Gypsy Solitaire” by Fraser and DeBolt.

I first heard this song in the early 70s when Fraser and Debolt’s first album showed up in a pile of promos I’d picked up at a used record store. Put it on the turntable this morning. It still holds up as one of the most outstanding albums I’ve ever heard. Cassell Webb and I covered the song in 1986 and we still play it every so often.
