“SONG FOR EWE”
with DAN MICHAELSON of DAN MICHAELSON & THE COASTGUARDS

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day.

We tend to like new music by old bands on these here pages, but today’s is a new-ish concern for VS, with no original connection to the original photocopied zine other than a spiritual one. This man has a mellifluous voice reminiscent of so many of our favourites, part Lee Hazlewood, part Stuart Staples, part Cave but all Dan Michaelson. With his band The Coastguards, Dan has made a third album in a trilogy (we love a concept here too), called “Memory” which was out last Friday and he’s found time to choose a memorable curio too. Welcome new VS fav, Dan Michaelson!

I first became aware of Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards when their song “Love Lends A Hand” appeared on the Rough Trade Counter Culture 10 album, in what was a classic year for the comp (among other corkers from Caitlin Rose, Allo Darlin’, Caribou, Strange Boys & Tame Impala).

I am a sucker for a deep voice with blurry, bleachy lyrics, and I’m never more happy than when I’m miserable, so the monochromatic songs of Dan grabbed both my lapels and lobes.

I was pleased to find Dan in among some mutual musical acquaintances, and doubly pleased that he’s chosen his “song for ewe”, so without further ado, it’s over to Dan:

“Mickey Newbury – “She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye”
This song landed on my door step wrapped in overseas stickers. Posted by a dear but distant friend, his simple message read “I know you’ll love this”. After I’d recovered from the initial rainfall sound effects, I was struck by the intimacy of this record and it’s oddly comforting sadness.

His voice I find mesmerising, everything in its delivery is so delicate and in keeping with the image of someone gently waking you up to say goodbye forever. I especially love the line “once again the old town will be talking..”, simple descriptions that tell so much about the moment.”

THANKYOU DAN, YOU’RE THE MAN. ALL THE BEST, NICK
